My mom really loved the little patchwork pouch I made for my camera so I decided to make her a purse in a similar style. This is the Ojyma Crossbody by Country Cow Designs.

I don’t like flaps, so I added a slip pocket with a magnetic snap on the front.

Other than checking seam allowances, I didn’t follow the pattern as it’s such a simple bag. What appears to be random patchwork is actually quite tricky to make look good! I narrowed myself to 3 dominate colors: pink, yellow and blue – cut out a whole bunch of scraps both fussy cut and blenders then got to work!

I quilted all the exterior pieces using standard quilt batting, then added self-adhesive foam out of the seam allowances for all pieces except exterior pocket. For the zipper panels, I used ¼” boning instead of foam.

I offset the strap tabs by about ¾” so that I would be able to put a rivet through the gusset once sewn up.

Had in incorporate some of that Ruby Star Society Magic Letters into the bag – BLT are her initials. 🙂

I used Ruby Star Society Selvedge Magic fabric for the strap. The printed selvedges just happened to be the finished width I wanted for my straps at ¾”. To reinforce the cotton woven, I used a ½” strip of Poly-Soft on each strap plus ⅝” grosgrain ribbon (held in place with DST) to keep the strap from stretching.

I used Kandou Patterns’ method for inserting a zipper pocket into the lining. Poly-Soft interfacing adhered to the lining pieces.

Final bag bound using pre-made bias tape.

The bulk of sewing was done on my workhorse TL-2010Q with the gusset and final construction done on my industrial 1541.

Finished size roughly 9″ tall x 8″ wide x 3″ deep.
